*This feature supports our prescription compliance efforts. Pharmacies may require sex at birth and/or gender to fulfill a prescription. Additionally, practices using Qualiphy to support their GLP-1 programs are required to provide sex at birth when requesting an exam and RX fulfillment.
Where to Find the Sex at Birth Field
The SAB field appears in the following places:
Patient Profile (Web) — under Patient Information when creating or editing a patient
Patient Profile (iOS) — under Patient Details in the mobile app
Patient Portal — patients can view and update their own SAB from their profile page
Qualiphy, eRx, and Prescription forms — SAB is referenced when these forms are submitted
Adding or Updating Sex at Birth
From the Web App
Navigate to the Patients section and open a patient's profile.
Click Edit Patient.
Locate the Sex at Birth dropdown under Patient Information.
Select Male or Female.
Click Save.
The SAB field is not required. You can save a patient profile with this field left empty.
From the iOS App
Open the patient's profile in the AR mobile app.
Tap the edit (pencil) icon.
Scroll to the Sex at Birth field under Patient Details.
Select Male or Female.
Tap Save.
From the Patient Portal
Patients can update their own SAB directly from their profile:
Log in to the Patient Portal.
Go to My Profile.
Locate the Sex at Birth field.
Select a value and tap/click Save.
Any updates made by the patient will reflect in the practice-side profile, and vice versa.
How SAB Works with eRx, Qualiphy, and Prescriptions
When a provider submits to eRx, Qualiphy, or creates a Prescription, the system determines the biological sex value to include in the patient payload using the following logic:
Patient's SAB | Patient's Gender | What Gets Sent |
Filled in | Any | SAB value is used |
Empty | Male or Female | Gender is used as SAB |
Empty | Non-Binary / Not Disclosed | Provider is prompted to enter SAB before submitting |
This logic only affects the data sent to the integration — it does not change how Gender is stored or displayed in the patient profile.
Non-Binary Patients Without SAB
If a patient's Gender is set to Non-Binary (or Prefer Not to Say / Not Disclosed) and no SAB has been entered, the system will display a prompt when the provider attempts to create a Qualiphy procedure, eRx form, or Prescription. The provider must select a SAB value before the form can be submitted.
Once selected, the SAB value will be saved to the patient's profile automatically.
Merging Patient Profiles
When merging two patient profiles, the SAB field will be displayed as part of the merge review. You can choose which SAB value to carry forward — or leave it empty — before confirming the merge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sex at Birth required? No. The SAB field is optional. Patients and staff can save profiles without filling it in.
Will existing patients have their Gender changed? No. The SAB field is separate from Gender. Existing patient Gender values are not affected.
What if a patient's SAB needs to be updated after a Qualiphy or eRx form is submitted? You can update the SAB field at any time by editing the patient's profile. The updated value will be used on the next form submission.
Can patients update their own SAB? Yes. Patients can view and update their SAB from their Patient Portal profile. Changes sync back to the practice-side profile.
Does SAB appear in patient filters? No. SAB is not surfaced in patient list filters — it is only visible within individual patient profiles and clinical forms.
